I Do! I Do! - Hampton Theatre Company | 3.15.26
Hampton Theater Company is currently producing the Tom Jones musical “I Do! I Do!” at the intimate and historic Quogue Community Hall from March 12th to March 29th. "I Do, I Do!" is a unique production that tells the story of a couple and the highs and lows of married life over the course of 50 years. What makes it so unique is that the entire show takes place in their bedroom; we learn of some of their challenges and successes through dialogue and seeing how each event affects them individually and collectively. The story starts on their wedding day and we see them handle doubts within themselves, times when they worry about finances, and challenges with their children and extended family. Nicholas Auletti (who plays Michael) and Savannah Jean Moore (Agnes) are given quite the task in this show! Being that they are the only two characters in it, they rarely leave the stage. I can’t imagine the amount of stamina this must take! They both were dynamic in their performances – Moore was fantastic in displaying the many vulnerable moments her character had, showing great range and emotion. Auletti was equally fantastic, particularly in providing humor in what might have been some of the more serious moments. The chemistry between the two was enjoyable to watch as they played off each other quite well.

And that isn't all – this is a musical after all – and they did a lovely job with this too. The songs all ranged from comedic numbers to heartfelt ones – one particularly poignant moment came in Act 2 when Moore sings "What Is a Woman". Her voice rings like a bell and you can see the emotion in her face. What I liked most about the show and the performances in it was how well both actors managed to connect with different moments in their characters' lives. As the story progresses, their characters have clearly aged past their actual age but that didn't change how well they portrayed certain emotions. I don't fancy myself much of an actor, but I'd say this is no small feat!
Congratulations to Director Rosemary T. Cline and the rest of the crew of “I Do! I Do!”! If you are looking for a wholesome, enjoyable piece of theater - look no further. This production is sure to resonate with you, no matter what stage of life you are in. “I Do!
